The Art of Invisibility by Kevin Mitnick

Worth Reading?

Absolutely. Kevin Mitnick (author) provides novice and sophisticated computer users numerous tips to enhance personal on-line / cyber security.  I've been in the security business for almost 30 years, and this is one of the best books I've seen that provides at home users deep, but applicable, insights to home on-line security.

Worth Owning?

Yes. The book gives readers the mental insights and perspective one must have to best maintain personal privacy.

Is there such a thing as right of privacy?

In theory yes. However Mitnick proves how computer/phone users relinquish that privacy through vanity purchases. The government does not need to monitor your information; you give your data away to companies who SELL your private information to big data services supporting businesses using big data to target your wallet; determine whether an employee should hire you; your credit information; your security "secret answers" to "secret questions".

Can you be invisible on the web?

No. You always leave a trace. You can only delay being found. You delay being found by creating a seperate identity. You must push equipment (computer, modems, printers, etc) and services only associated with that identity. You cannot use that equipment at home because of risk of contaminaton with your real identity. Your ability to hide will last only for so long, because you will eventually make a mistake.

Everything you do can be monitored at work, home or play. At work, whatever you print resides on the queue at work for the network monitors. Whatever you try to print can be used to assess your printing habits, and whether they are tied to work. Computer owned electronic equipment (phones, computers, cars) can be tracked an monitored to assess your level of work performance, as well as personal habits.

What benefit is the book?

Mitnick provides readers a wealth of at-home easy-to-apply fundamentals and concepts you can employ to secure your daily personal and business dealings.

You'll need a very particular set of skills if you want to get a job at some of the most competitive tech companies out there.

Just look at the data compiled by job site Paysa. The site has reviewed tens of millions of résumés, provided by a combination of Paysa's partners, recruiters, and users.

Paysa took a closer look at the résumés of people who work at Google, Apple, and Microsoft, to get a sense of what skills those employees had in common.

All three companies made Business Insider's list of the best places to work in America. Microsoft employs 120,849 people; Apple's workforce weighs in at over 100,000 people; and Alphabet (Google's parent company) has 61,000 employees.

If you want to join any of those workforces, it definitely helps to know what they're looking for.

Paysa compiled a list of in-demand skills, in the four fields within tech that employ the most people.

Here's what you need to compete for a job with som of the biggest players in tech:

"Build Your Dream Network: Forging Powerful Relationships in a Hyper-Connected World by J. Kelly Hoey.

Here is a value-added book regarding networking I found very interesting and insightful. The book is, “Build Your Dream Network: Forging Powerful Relationships in a Hyper-Connected World by J. Kelly Hoey.

The author starts by highlighting "skills alone won't make you a success". This is because everyone calls themselves an expert; college degrees can be bypassed, anybody can start a business in any location; and, the concept of working in a meritocracy is a fable.

What makes you special are people who KNOW what you bring to the table in terms of knowledge and experience; that you do what you do at a superlative level; that you offer distinct insights.  The bottom line is you need an audience, and that audience is your network- it’s about credibility and reducing the employer’s/investor’s risk.

Hoey provides some tactical and strategic approaches toward getting people to KNOW what you bring to the table.

Frankly much of what she offers in the book is familiar to most of us, but there is a unique insightful 10% really worth pondering and putting into action.
